Kids Don't Float
Program
The program features
large boards with colourful graphics along with a supply of
children's PFDs (personal floatation devices). These
boards are erected at marinas, boat launching ramps, parks and
swimming areas. The program is run on an honour system
and offers free day use of the PFDs.
History
The Kids Don’t Float Program was initially developed in 1996 by a group in Homer, Alaska as a response to
Alaska’s high rate of drowning. The program was piloted in Homer and then adapted for statewide use. The program
is currently sponsored as a coalition of the U.S. Coast Guard, State of Alaska, Alaska Safe Kids, and other
community volunteers. The new Alaska Boating Safety Program provides primary funding for the program.
